« Environmental Protection of the Mind. Embracing the Earth as Our Home »

The rivalry between technological advancement and social development led to the environmental crises we experience in the 21st century. Technological advancement resulted in natural resource depletion, acceleration of climate change, and environmental degradation. Is this what we want to see?

From the Buddhist perspective, the inner and outer environments -- mental activities, and, interactions with others and nature, stems from our mindset. Technological advancement vital in this world could be employed as a driving force for sustainable development and to protect the environment. We should begin by shifting our value systems and encouraging introspection.

Environmental protection is not only a way of thinking or a living style, it is also our duty to care for the planet. Dharma Drum Mountain makes the following pledge towards environmental protection:

I vow to
value every thought and action,
grounded from the heart and be a role model,
pledge myself towards the service of humanity,
refrain from evil and do good, thereby caring for the environment.

I vow to
value all social interactions,
guided by ethics and morality,
accept both favorable and unfavorable conditions with gratitude,

 and contribute towards human dignity.

I vow to
value every present moment,
recognizing everyone’s right to survival,
refrain from wastefulness and pollution,
be content with my blessings and live a simple life.

I vow to
value every life and natural resource,
regard the Earth as the common denominator for all,
safeguard the living environments for all animals and plants,
and secure the future generations’ right to enjoy a viable Earth.
