Alliance of Religions and Conservation (ARC) United Kingdom
In 1985 HRH Prince Philip, then international president of WWF, asked a question. He could see that one of the main obstacles to conservation was the fact that people on the ground did not seem to care. He asked himself what made him care, and he realized it was his faith. So he wondered whether other faiths had the same kinds of teachings. He suggested WWF bring five faiths together at Assisi to learn what they taught about protecting creation and the sacredness of the environment. From that meeting, ARC eventually emerged. So as an organization, you could say that not only do we have the sacredness of the planet at our heart, but we also have the sacred question: Why Do I Care?
ARC helps the major religions of the world develop environmental programmes, through their teachings and beliefs. We also help key secular environmental organizations develop partnerships with faiths, in order to protect our living planet.
