UNESCO Artist for Peace, Honorary President of the Foundation Balthus

Countess Setsuko Klossowska de Rola was named UNESCO Artist for Peace in 2005.

Born in Tokyo, Japan, she joined the department of French language at Sophia University.

In 1967, she married French painter Balthus (Baltusz Klossowski de Rola) (1908-2001) and became a painter herself. After Balthus’s passing, she established the Foundation Balthus and became its Honorary President promoting his artwork. She exhibited Balthus’s and her own artwork in Kumamoto, Yokohama, Tokyo, Paris and Aix-en-Provence. She recently held the exhibition Balthus in Tokyo and Kyoto, and Balthus :The Last Studies in Tokyo at the Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum.

She is member of the jury for the Mondialogo School Contest and the UNESCO/Panasonic Eco Picture Diary Global Contest.

She advocates for world heritage, gender equality, empowerment of women, and peace through promoting education and art.
